Gems : Beryl

There are several varieties of Beryl, some of which are better known by their own names. Emerald, for example, is the green variety, and aquamarine the sky blue.
Emerald is one of the most flawed, or ‘included’, gemstones commonly found, and most emeralds are oiled to enhance their colour and reduce the appearance of the natural inclusions. So you need to take care when cleaning your emeralds, as washing with strong detergents could dilute or remove some oil, and the stone may have to be re-oiled.
Beryls do not like excessive heat, and although they can tolerate temperatures above 100ºC, warm water is better than hot water, as it reduces the dangers of thermal shock. Beryl jewellery should be treated with greater care than other, tougher, stones like diamond, sapphire or ruby.
